Mountain-Bay State Park Trail:

The Mountain-Bay Trail is a Wisconsin State Park Trail that occupies the former Chicago and Northwestern Railroad right-of-way between Wausau and Green Bay.  The entire 83.4-mile trail extends from Marathon County through Shawano County and into Brown County ending just west of Green Bay in the Village of Howard.  The trail travels through a variety of agricultural, forest, and wetland landscapes that exhibit many of the glacial landforms in Wisconsin. The trail links with the Ice Age National Recreation Trail in Marathon County, the Wiouwash Trail in Shawano County, and a network of trails in Brown County.

Access points include the Weston, Ringle, Marathon County Landfill and Norrie trailheads each of which have parking lots and self-registration stations for trail passes.  The self-registration stations have envelopes for you to complete and pay the $5 daily fee at any time.  Marathon County trail tread is crushed, compacted limestone.

Trail Fees:

  • State trail fees apply for this state park trail.
  • Bicyclists 16 years and older $5 Daily Fee or $25 Annual State Park Trail Pass.
  • Those of you who purchase DNR State Bike Trail Annual Passes that are good for all State bike trails (including the Mountain-Bay State Park Trail) may be interested to know that if you purchase the DNR State Bike Trail Annual Pass from the Marathon County Parks, Recreation and Forestry Dept., 70% of the fee stays right here and is used only on Mountain-Bay maintenance. We receive no portion of DNR State Bike Trail Annual Pass revenues sold elsewhere, including the DNR office in Rib Mountain. Buy from us and help support your local State Bike Trail!
  • $5 daily pass, self-registation envelopes are available anytime at the Weston, Marathon County Landfill, Norrie, and Hatley trailheads.
  • Annual passes are available on-line at our recreation program website, access here or from the  park office at 212 River Drive, Ste 2. Wausau.
