Indigent Burial and Cremation Services
Overview
Marathon County, through its Medical Examiner's Office, is seeking proposals from qualified funeral homes to provide indigent burial or cremation services. These services are for decedents under the primary jurisdiction of Marathon County who are indigent, have no identified next-of-kin, or whose next-of-kin have relinquished their rights to the body.
The RFP is for a non-exclusive contractual relationship. Marathon County reserves the right to enter into agreements with multiple providers.

Scope of Services
The selected funeral home(s) will be responsible for:
- Providing burial or cremation services for indigent decedents at an agreed-upon cost.
- Making reasonable efforts to locate and contact next-of-kin. The definition and determination of "reasonable efforts" shall be at the sole discretion of the Marathon County Medical Examiner.
- Coordinating with the Marathon County Medical Examiner's Office for the timely and respectful transfer and disposition of remains.
Timeline
- Questions will be received up until September 10, 2025.
- Responses to all questions received will be issued via addendum of September 12, 2025, via posting on the Marathon County website.
- All proposals will be accepted electronically and must be submitted by September 26, 2025, at 3:00 PM CST (updated 9.22.25) to:
