Household Hazardous Waste

Dispose of your hazardous household waste safely, in a manner that won't harm the environment. You must schedule an appointment before dropping off hazardous items. These materials must be handled by certified staff only.

Please schedule your appointment at least one day in advance. Appointments are only available on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. (No Thursday appointments)

A typical appointment takes 15-30 minutes, but if you have a large amount of items to drop off (more than 20 individual items, or a large truck or trailer load-full), please schedule 2 sequential appointments to allow yourself and our staff more time.

 

Accepted Items 

The following items are collected as part of the Marathon County Hazardous Household Waste Collection Program and are NO CHARGE for drop-off to all Marathon County residents.*

  • Aerosol paint cans with paint in it (empties can be recycled as scrap metal at our location)
  • Anti-freeze * (5 gallons or less, no appointment needed, but must check in at the scale office upon arrival.)
  • Cleaning Solvents
  • Creosote / Paving Tar
  • Degreasers
  • Drain Cleaners
  • Dry Cleaning Fluids
  • Floor/ furniture polish
  • Fuel / Lighter fluids
  • Fungicides
  • Gasoline/gas mixtures
  • Gun Cleaners
  • Ether
  • Herbicides
  • Hobby materials/chemicals
  • Insecticides
  • Metal cleaners
  • Mildew cleaners
  • Nail polish removers
  • Oil-based paint
  • Oil-used motor* (5 gal. or less, no appointment needed, but must check in at the scale office upon arrival.)
  • Oven cleaners
  • Thinners
  • Turpentine
  • Varnish

NOTE: For antifreeze or motor oil, if you have less than 5 gallons, you do not need to make an appointment. Small amounts can be brought anytime during our open hours. Please check-in at the scale office upon arrival before disposing oil or antifreeze.

*This service is available to anyone from any county. There is no charge to Marathon County Residents, but residents from other counties must pay full disposal costs. Check locally for reimbursements from your county agents. For example, Lincoln County Solid Waste Department was offering up to $75 reimbursement for household hazardous waste disposal paid by their residents.

 

Items NOT accepted as Hazardous Household Waste

  • Ammunition
  • Biohazards (blood, medical waste, other potentially infectious materials - OPIMs)
  • Explosives (gun powder, dynamite, ammunition)
  • Latex (water-based) paint (not hazardous; learn how to properly dispose of Latex Paint in the Latex Paint Section
  • Fire extinguishers (if empty, take to our site to recycle as scrap metal for free)
  • Medical waste - Medications and Pharmaceuticals (Locate a Dropbox)
  • Radioactive material
  • Regular hygiene chemicals like shampoo, shaving cream, toothpaste, etc.
